The Salming 1148

from Idea to Reality - A Watch That Carries the Story

Börje Salming was never afraid of new ideas. One of them was to create a watch that reflected his years in Toronto and the life around hockey - a personal tribute, made to feel naturally at home on the wrist. When time didn’t allow him to see the project through, his family and the team around him took on the responsibility of completing the vision.

In the production of The Salming 1148, our mission was clear: to build a limited collector’s chronograph that feels as genuine as the story behind it. A Swedish-built chronograph, assembled in Sweden, powered by a Swiss movement. The CN Tower as the seconds hand, the “King” reference on the crown, and individual numbering tied to 1148 NHL games, each detail carrying meaning without ever losing its timeless character.

The man behind the watch
Börje Salming’s story is the story of a player who never stepped aside. From his early years in Brynäs IF to his rise in Toronto, he built his reputation through courage, loyalty, and a relentless will to give everything for the team. When he entered the NHL in the 1970s, Swedish players were still rare in North America, and many European players were unfairly seen as skilled but not physically strong enough for the league. Börje changed that perception. With his fearless style of play, his willingness to block shots, and his ability to stand up for the team, he quickly earned the respect of fans and teammates alike. Over 16 seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he became one of the club’s most iconic figures. Out of his 1,148 NHL games, 1,099 were played in a Leafs jersey, and in 1996 he became the first European NHL player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

A design shaped by Börje’s own vision
The Salming 1148 is not simply a watch inspired by Börje Salming — it is also shaped by his own ideas. Salming Watches describes how Börje was personally involved in the design process and contributed input on the functions, the bracelet, the black dial, and the crown. Several of the watch’s most distinctive features come directly from his own vision, making it more than a tribute. It becomes something deeply connected to the man himself. For us, the mission was clear: to bring that vision to life as a limited collector’s chronograph that feels as genuine as the story behind it. A Swedish-built watch, assembled in Sweden, powered by a Swiss movement, and designed with details that carry meaning without losing their timeless character.

Details that carry the legacy
Every detail of The Salming 1148 was chosen with purpose. The CN Tower second hand is a direct reference to Toronto, the city that became such a defining part of Börje’s life. The crown includes a King reference inspired by his nickname. The number 21 is the only number on the dial, paying tribute to his jersey number. The chronograph function is a nod to the years when he used to train and time his daughter Bianca. The rotor is engraved with Börje’s signature, and each watch is individually numbered from 1 to 1148 — the same number as the NHL games he played. That is what gives the watch its weight. Not only the materials or the mechanics, but the meaning built into every element. It is a watch designed to reflect a life, a career, and a legacy that still resonates far beyond the game itself.
